Taking on university study at the same time as raising a child (or two, or three) is, in a word, bonkers. It’s certifiably, legitimately, crazy. You’re dealing with the normal stresses of essay deadlines and exam revision, alongside bottles and nappies – or, if your children are older, hormones and their own exams. It’s bananas – and you’d think people would be cashing in on it, with guides to student life as a parent here, there and everywhere.
Except there aren’t. If you look on Google, there’s the odd resource for student parents here and there – but the vast majority of results will be support for parents of students, struggling with empty nest syndrome when their children have departed for university. If you’re lucky, your university might have a society or group to bring student parents together to discuss and overcome the unique challenges you face in balancing these two very different lives… but that’s it, and that’s only if you’re lucky.
That’s something I want to change, and that’s where the Student Parent Survival Guide steps in. Originally conceived (pardon the pun) as an idea for a book; I decided that instead I want it to be a free, easily-accessible resource for all student parents and student parents-to-be everywhere, from the point of view of someone who’s been there, done that, got the cap and gown to prove it (not literally, but there’s a very nice picture of me wearing it on the windowsill).
From the challenges of student finance to the joy of graduating with your child by your side, this guide will cover everything – and I’ll collect it together on this page, for you to click through at your convenience.
What’s more, I want this to be as interactive and inclusive as possible. If you’ve got a question you’d like me to try and answer; an issue you’d like me to discuss or you’ve got an experience of your own that you would like to contribute, please send me an email at email@example.com and let me know. I’m happy to host guest posts about your experiences as student parents – the more, the merrier!
